Zippy created a self-driving delivery robot developed for last-mile grocery and package delivery. It was designed to carry up to four packages at a time, picked up at local stores, and delivered to secure boxes at the recipients' homes. Like an autonomous vehicle, Zippy can drive on pavement and navigate obstacles.
We designed the form factor that houses Zippy's robotic functions. We then developed the expressive "eyes" that give Zippy the ability to communicate its intent with people on streets and give the device a sense of personality (which we found critical to its acceptance). The robot was fully engineered and tested but was not launched before the acquisition of Zippy by GM's Cruise autonomous vehicle venture.
